The Board of Health (BOH) believes a safe Halloween is possible in Harvard, but it will take everyone’s cooperation during this time of COVID-19. To that end, the BOH strongly urges all residents to make the following modifications to the traditional trick-or-treat activities:
All of Governor Baker’s orders must be adhered to. This includes the order that sets a maximum of 100 participants at any outdoor event and 25 people indoors. That is why we advised that trick-or-treating around the Common not take place this year. Governor Baker’s order requiring cloth face coverings applies during Halloween as well; a cloth mask must be worn under a costume mask.
The Department of Public Health’s and the Centers for Disease Control’s guidance says that modified trick-or-treating can happen with the following modifications:
- Maintain social distancing, including when handing out candy. Consider rigging up a 6-foot PVC pipe and sliding pre-bagged treats to visitors, or set out bags of treats on a table 6 feet (or more) from your steps.
- Self-serve bowls of candy are not advised.
- Carry hand sanitizer and use it.
- Save candy to eat at home after washing your hands.
None of us wants to be dealing with COVID-19, but the disease is here in Harvard, with over 20 residents reported as having contracted this illness. This is not the time to let down our guard. Harvard residents are considerate, and if we all successfully adapt, we can make this work for the kids.
