Harvard’s cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began—as reported by the state on July 29—remained at 18 for the sixth week in a row. Data from Aug. 5 was not available at press time. To date, the Press has verified that two residents and two recent residents have died from complications of COVID-19.
Statewide, the increase in cases of COVID-19 for the week between July 28 and Aug. 4 was 2,293, up from the previous week’s increase of 1,519. After 12 weeks of steady declines in the number of COVID-19-related deaths each week, for the week ending Aug. 4, the number of deaths increased by 105, up from 100 during the week ending July 28.
The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients at Emerson Hospital on Aug. 4 was one, up from zero a week earlier. At the Memorial and University campuses of the UMass Medical Center in Worcester, the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients rose from 10 to 17 in the week between July 28 and Aug. 4.
The Bureau of Prisons website reported on Aug. 4 that the number of active COVID-19 cases among inmates at the Federal Medical Center in Devens had fallen from two to one over the previous week, while the number of active cases among staff grew from zero to one over that same week. Since the COVID-19 outbreak at the FMC, 50 inmates and six staff members have recovered. Two inmates died of complications from COVID-19.
