Arm in Arm’s mission is to promote and uphold a safe, inclusive social climate that values diversity and fosters respect for one another.
We advance our mission through events that contribute to an understanding of, and appreciation for, all our residents and visitors. We confront and oppose expressions of hatred, intolerance, and discrimination, and work to unify the community against division. We work in collaboration with the larger community by building a community-wide network of responses to prejudice and discrimination.
Given the national response to the death of George Floyd and the many others before him, Arm in Arm members had a thoughtful discussion of how to fulfill our mission in these troubled times. We will lead by what we believe we do best—educate, promote honest and open discussion, raise awareness, and advocate for inclusiveness and respect. We will be rolling out the following programs and events over the next month or two and will let residents know about them through our website (ArminArmHarvard.com), our Facebook page, the Harvard Press, and Nextdoor Harvard.
A Zoom panel discussion on Thursday, June 18, at 7 p.m. with several Harvard residents and Harvard’s Police Chief Ed Denmark. The panel will share thoughtful and informed points of view based on their own experiences with, and knowledge about, racial injustice. We welcome your questions at this educational forum. Townwide book read and Zoom discussion on a book (to be determined) that is relevant to racism. We will post about this late-July event soon.
A potential Zoom discussion with a university professor on the subject of race relations, possibly through a historical perspective.
Some other ideas are being worked out, but these are not developed enough to promote at the current time. We have links to resources for those interested in researching more on their own on our webpage, ArminArmHarvard.com, Resources page. We will be continually updating as we learn along the way.
