The girls swimming and diving team ended its season with a ninth-place finish in the MIAA State Division 1 Championships at Boston University Saturday, Feb. 15. Bromfield was the only team from the Midland-Wachusett League to place in the top 10 among 37 competing teams.

Junior Ella Church led the way with second-place finishes in both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle races. “She is well on her way to being the state champ in [those events] next year,” wrote Coach Amy Gothorpe in an email. In addition, the team consisting of senior Izzy Conners, Church, junior Abigail Boissy, and sophomore Catherine Zhou claimed eighth place in the 400-yard freestyle relay and ninth place in the 200-yard medley relay events. Conners capped her performances with top-20 finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke races. And freshman Lily Tonole placed eighth in the 1-meter dive.
The boys finished 35th among 42 teams. Senior Dwight Childers broke the team’s record for the 200-yard freestyle race and placed 10th with a time of 1 minute, 48.60 seconds. Senior Christopher Clark set personal records in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle. And the 200-yard freestyle relay team, consisting of Childers, senior Anthony Mavilia, sophomore Zachary Becker and Clark, set a season best time of 1:34.91 and finished 17th among 30 competing teams.
