The Bromfield girls track team placed fifth out of 42 teams with 34 points while the boys team placed 23rd out of 44 teams with 7 points at the MIAA State Division 5 Championship Sunday, Feb. 16, at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
Despite the absence of senior Tessa McClain, who was unable to compete due to an injury, and mounting pressure to perform well, the Bromfield girls track team placed among the top 10 finishers in seven events. Junior Hannah Beckman came in fourth in the 1000-meter run with a time of 3 minutes, 9.84 seconds. Senior Sam Schoenberg came in fifth in the 300-meter dash with a time of 42.31 seconds. Junior Claire Stoddard ran a time of 1:42.60 in the 600-meter dash to place eighth. Senior Liza Toll ran a time of 7.67 in the 55-meter dash. In the 1-mile race freshman Molly Squire ran a time of 5:47.36. Squire crossed the finish line so closely with Lillian Hudanich of Norwell that they were awarded the same time, an unusual occurrence. Junior Kaitlyn Ostrowski ran a time of 5:51.27 in the mile. Freshman Marissa Flynn ran a time of 13:18.03 in the 2-mile race.
The 4×200-meter relay team of Stoddard, sophomore Pariss Eanglee, Toll, and Schoenberg placed second with a time of 1:50.56. The 4×800-meter relay team of Beckman, eighth-grader Emma Squire, Ostrowski, and Molly Squire placed eighth with a time of 10:40.85.
In field events, Schoenberg placed first in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 4 inches. Stoddard placed sixth in the long jump with a distance of 16-5.
The boys team placed in two events. Cole O’Neil placed third in the 300-meter dash with a time of 37.09, breaking the Bromfield record for that event for a second time this season. He surpassed his own record of 37.78 by approximately 0.7 seconds to much surprise and excitement. Junior Jordan Colon placed eighth in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.07 and ran a time of 38.16 in the 300-meter dash. Freshman Liam Morrison ran a time of 9.30 in the 55-meter hurdles.
Schoenberg, Toll, Eanglee, Stoddard, McClain, and O’Neil qualified for the All-State Championship which will take place Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
