Apple farmer, gardener, passionate sports fan

Lawrence (Larry) Chester Cregar, 81, of Harvard died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Keystone Center in Leominster.
Larry is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sheila (Gabrielsen) Cregar; his daughter Katrina Kennett; his daughter Holly and her husband Kenneth Lee; his brother Royall Cregar and his wife Sandra; his grandchildren Nigel Kennett, Lauren Kennett, and Travis Lee; and many close friends.
Raised in Harvard, the son of Ernest and Helen Cregar, Larry attended the Bromfield School, where he excelled in sports and forged many friendships that lasted his lifetime.
Over the years Larry worked in various capacities at Westward Orchards and Carlson Orchards in Harvard and later at J.P. Sullivan & Co. on Barnum Road in Ayer, where he was in charge of the cold storage rooms. He also tended his own small orchard, next to his house.
Larry had a passion for sports, animals, and his orchards and gardens. These passions led to many adventures, including trips to Hawaii, San Francisco, and Mexico, a lifelong quest to grow a great apple, and attendance at some of New England’s greatest sporting events. It was obvious, however, that his greatest joy came from the moments he spent with family. He was a special man with a generous heart who will truly be missed.
Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Larry on Friday, Jan. 31, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Badger Funeral Home, 347 King St., Littleton. His memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Congregational Church of Harvard, 5 Still River Road. Burial at Bellevue Cemetery will be private.
