Thank you to the Press for accurately reporting on the Ann Lees Road softball field fiasco (Harvard Press, Aug. 15, 2019, edition). Our student athletes, especially the girls from the Bromfield School, deserve better.
Annually, Bromfield parent athletic user fees pay for approximately 99% of the yearly cost of running our school’s athletic budget. This user fee percentage or “pay to play tax” is one of the highest in central Massachusetts and possibly in the Commonwealth. Varying athletic team participant counts at times also can lead to unequal financial allocations between our boys and girls programs. School administration has done its best in finding financial fairness for the athlete user fee process without any new increase of direct tax dollars.
The Bromfield Booster Club is looking for ways to level the financial playing field for all our student athletes by engaging our Harvard community and commercial business partners to voluntarily support our fundraising efforts.
If you are interested in contributing and improving the Bromfield School athletic experience, we need your participation in any number of ways.
First, come and see how you can help by attending the Bromfield Booster Club annual meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5, in the Bromfield School cafeteria. Meet the executive committee, share some ideas, and help us move forward.
Second, the Bromfield Booster Club will host its second annual golf outing to raise money for women’s athletic programs at the Bromfield School on Wednesday, Oct. 9, with event registration starting at 12 p.m. at the Shaker Hills Country Club at 146 Shaker Road. The day will be more than just golf. The afternoon of recreation will include several competitions, wine tasting, silent auction, attendee raffle, awards, reception, and dinner.
