MassDevelopment has postponed indefinitely a planned June 10 Super Town Meeting to vote on a proposal to rezone Vicksburg Square for residential use. The proposal would have allowed MassDevelopment to demolish the historical buildings if their renovation proved too costly. In a letter to the town administrators of Harvard and Shirley and the Ayer town manager, recently appointed Devens Senior Vice President Jessica Strunkin said upcoming public hearings would also be postponed until fall.
Recent hearings in Devens and Harvard were contentious. A vocal group of Devens residents appeared at both to oppose MassDevelopment’s plan, which they said allowed a future developer too much latitude.
“We appreciate the feedback received from residents of Devens, Ayer, Harvard, and Shirley, as well as the Devens business community,” Strunkin wrote. “We look forward to working with all of our stakeholders as we explore strategies to preserve the Vicksburg Square buildings.
