At its Monday meeting this week, the School Committee voted unanimously to approve Friday, June 14, as the last day of school before summer vacation. Chair SusanMary Redinger jokingly described the vote as “the most fun thing we do as a School Committee.” Certainly many of the district’s 1,065 students will mark the day in red letters on their calendars.
Snowless weekdays from October 2018 through February 2019 raised hopes (or fears) that this school year might pass without a single snow day. But then came the storm on Monday, March 4, and the buses did not roll.
The school district plans its calendar to allow for up to five snow days a year, and in recent years, all five have been used. A snowier winter this year could have kept school in session until June 20. But instead, students will dash out the doors almost a full week earlier. Besides being a Friday, June 14 is also an early release day. “That worked out really nicely,” Redinger said.
