Many thanks to the town of Harvard and The Bromfield School for making the League of Women Voters’ inaugural Civics Cup such a smashing success.
We had 44 students register to compete in 12 teams in grades 8 to 12.
The first-place winners were a group of seniors: Kate Selig, Christopher Thornton, Kevin Yu, and Yohhan Kumarasinghe. They won the trophy and used “Taxation is Theft” as their parody meme team name. Second place was claimed by the Pawnee Goddesses, a group of young women in 10th and 11th grades, followed by a crack team of eighth-graders called the Civics Super Squad. Only 7 points separated the first- and third-place winners.
A big thank you to those who volunteered to help out—to act as a team liaison, scorer or timekeeper, to serve as a lifeline or speaker or help in registration, setup, or cleanup. We could not have done it without you. Our gratitude to Bromfield faculty members Kathleen Doherty and Andy Wright, who wrote the questions and also served as judges. Special thanks to the Civics Cup committee who worked so hard to put together this event: Shannon Molloy (chair), Betsy Kendall, Sharon McCarthy, Jackie Normand, and Anya Zulawnik. Anya made sure the whole event was taped, and it should be up on Harvard Cable TV soon.
Thanks to Sorrento’s Pizzeria, Harvard Sweet Boutique, and Carlson Orchards for donating pizza, cookies, and cider for the event.
Finally, thank you to our own Harvard Town Moderator Bill Barton, who conducted the entire competition and did a masterful job. It was fun and ended on time.
