The Bromfield girls and boys swim teams have continued to shine the past few weeks, working hard to advance to the Mid-Wachusett League championships at the end of January. The Trojan girls currently rank third in the league and the boys fifth.
The team, which consists of swimmers from Bromfield, Littleton, and Ayer-Shirley, traveled to Clark University Dec. 20 to compete against Advanced Math and Science Academy (AMSA), where the girls solidly defeated their opponent, 135-40. Bromfield senior Mia Hopman and Ayer-Shirley senior Jessica Russell took first and second place, respectively in the 500-yard freestyle. Littleton sophomore Ella Church destroyed the 200-yard individual medley with a shattering time of 2:17.83 minutes, easily qualifying her for Division 1 state championships. The boys narrowly missed taking first place, 92-79. Bromfield junior Dwight Childers won the 100-yard butterfly with an impressive time of 1:04.88, while Bromfield junior Christopher Clark grabbed first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a 53.18 finish, and Bromfield eighth-grader Tate Brown took second place in the 100-yard backstroke, easily qualifying for league championships with a time of 1:14.38.
The boys and girls joined forces in a co-ed meet against Worcester Public Schools on Jan. 3. Girls and boys competed in the same events, earning a final score of 140-38. Ayer-Shirley sophomore Colman Richards placed first in the 200-yard freestyle, Littleton senior Derek Ng took first in the 100-yard breaststroke, and the Trojan girls and boys both placed first and second in all three relay events.
The boys upset Grafton this past Saturday with a final score of 98-40. Rookie swimmer and Ayer-Shirley junior Dimitri Battle set a personal record of 1:35.56 in the 100-yard breaststroke. The girls team had worthy competition, but ended the meet with a 105-65 win. Bromfield junior Shea Oldham set a personal record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 28.96.
The Trojans competed against number one seed Algonquin on Tuesday. Although the Trojan girls and boys were unable to take down the undefeated records of both teams, Bromfield shined with several personal records and qualifying championship times. Bromfield freshman Catherine Zhou took first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 59.16. Junior Anthony Mavilia set another personal record in the 50-yard freestyle with 25.99. For the first time, Bromfield seventh-grader Ryan Donohoe and ninth-grader Regan Donohoe entered the 500-yard freestyle with respectable times of 7:02.01 and 7:02.97. Final girls score: 83-95. Final boys score: 80-90.
The Trojan girls’ overall record is 7-1. The boys’ overall record is 5-3. The team travels to Clark University on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 4 p.m. to face Westborough, the number two seed in the Mid-Wachusett League.
