December 20, 2018

To sign up for any Council on Aging events or programs, to reserve a seat on the COA van, or for more information, please call 978-456-4120.

Unless otherwise noted, events are at Hildreth House and signup and payment are necessary in advance.

New Year’s Eve luncheon

Come to Hildreth House at noon on Monday, Dec. 31, to ring in the new year with your friends and the COA staff. The luncheon menu includes pad Thai, chicken satay, and other choices from Harvard’s Siam Pepper restaurant. The cost is $10 per person.

Fuel assistance

Applications for fuel assistance can be made. The state gross annual income limits for fuel assistance are:

  • $35,510 for a household of one.
  • $46,437 for a household of two.

Also, Harvard offers a Harvard Energy Assistance Team (HEAT) program. If you are concerned about paying your heating bill, let COA know.

Snow day policy

If the Harvard public schools are closed because of inclement weather, COA programs are canceled, and the van may be taken off the road. If there is a school delay, please call the COA office for more information.

Beat the holiday blues

If you are alone or have a hard time at this time of year, here are some strategies for coping with the holiday blues:

  • Don’t isolate yourself. If you can’t be with family, invite some friends to share the holidays. Come to Hildreth House to enjoy fellowship and activities.
  • Volunteer your time. Helping others is a great way to forget your own issues.
  • Try to avoid alcohol. Alcohol is a depressant and will intensify feelings of sadness.
  • Watch your finances. Set a budget for gift giving and stick to it.
  • Don’t deny or try to hide feelings of sadness. Just sharing your feelings with others can often help.

Van drivers needed

Are you newly retired and looking for something to do? Want to work part time and support your community at the same time? The COA is looking for van drivers. If interested, call Debbie at the COA office.
