This is the final farmstand column for the season, but Doe Orchards and Willard Farm will remain open through much of November, Westward Orchards will be open until the end of December, and Carlson Orchards is open year-round. Old Frog Pond Farm has a mailing list for customers who might enjoy an occasional fresh bag of arugula or other organic offerings from the farm’s greenhouse on a cold winter’s day. See each farm’s listing for what to expect this week as well as in the months to come.
Carlson Orchards, 115 Oak Hill Road
Pick-your-own apples is over for the season. Braeburn, Cortland, Northern Spy, Cameo, Jonagold, Empire, Granny Smith, Fuji, Mutsu, Pink Lady, Baldwin, Golden Delicious, Evercrisp, McIntosh, and Macoun apples available in the store, along with regular and hard cider. Brookdale Fruit Farm’s butternut and acorn squash, gourds, and mini-pumpkins also available in the store. Carlson’s stays open all year selling their apples while they last and their regular and hard cider. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the week, and until 5 p.m. on weekends. Fresh-baked holiday pies are available by order.
Doe Orchards, 327 Ayer Road
Pick-your-own Macoun, Empire, Granny Smith, Cortland, and McIntosh apples. At the stand are half or full pecks of Honeycrisp, Empire, Gala, Cortland, McIntosh and Golden Delicious apples, along with gourds, cider, and apple firewood. Pick-your-own will continue as long as there are good apples on the trees. The stand will remain open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Christmas tree cutting ends. Cut-your-own Christmas tree starts the Friday of Thanksgiving weekend and continues Saturdays and Sundays until trees are sold out, which happens quickly.
Old Frog Pond Farm, 38 Eldridge Road
Stand is closed for the season, but the farm has garlic as well as regular and sweet potatoes and raspberry jam available for pick-up, which can be arranged by contacting the farm on its website at oldfrogpondfarm.com or calling 978-456-9828. Customers can also add their names to the farm’s mailing list to be notified of organic crops from the greenhouse that might be sold over the winter/spring. Mailing list signup is available on the website.
Westward Orchards, 178 Massachusetts Avenue
Pick-your-own apples and pick-your-own pumpkins are done for the season. Honeycrisp, Roxbury Russet, Baldwin, McIntosh, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Jonaprince, Macoun, Empire, and Cortland apples, as well as cider, are available in the store. Quince, plums, and Bartlett, Bosc, and Seckel pears are also available in the store, along with Brussels sprouts, leeks, celery root, beets, kale, kale sprouts, cabbage, onions, potatoes and winter squash, including buttercup, honey cup, sunshine, delicata, and spaghetti. Westward remains open through Dec. 31, selling its apples, pears, potatoes, and winter squash, as well as cider doughnuts and chocolate frosted doughnuts on weekends. Holiday pies are available by order; Thanksgiving deadline is Nov. 11. Westward will hold its annual Holiday Open House Nov. 30 through Dec. 2.
Willard Farm, 218 Still River Road
Red Norland, Green Mountain, and Yukon Gold potatoes, winter squash, including butternut, buttercup, delicata, acorn, carnival, red kuri, blue Hubbard, and a long green Italian variety of squash called cucuzza. Pumpkins, including pie pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, hot peppers, and ornamental edible pepper plants still available. According to Paul Willard, the stand remains open each year “until we run out of stuff to sell or it gets too cold.
