At its July 31 meeting the Select Board appointed the first four members of the seven-member Permanent Building Committee. The board voted 3-0 with one abstention to appoint Cindy Russo, Rick Maiore, Steve Moeser, and Pablo Carbonell to the newly created committee. Select Board member Kara Minar abstained over concerns that residents may not have had enough opportunity to apply for committee membership, given that the Press was on break when the Select Board approved the committee’s charge on July 10.
The four appointees bring a variety of skills and experience to the committee. Carbonell runs a construction company, Moeser is a retired architect, Russo works in finance and also served on the Public Safety Building Committee along with Maiore. Carbonell and Maiore both served on the Town Hall and Hildreth House building committees.
The Select Board created the Permanent Building Committee to oversee municipal building projects from design to completion, with the exception of school building projects that are funded by the Massachusetts School Building Authority, such as the new elementary school. The hope is that members will build experience that will carry over from project to project, especially in understanding how requests for proposals and the bidding process work. The first project the committee will take on is the accessibility renovation of the old library, slated to go out to bid soon and to begin construction in the fall.
Two seats on the committee remain unfilled. More information on the skill sets the board is looking for as well as the committee’s charge is available on the town website. The seventh member of the committee will be the new facilities manager, who has not yet been hired.
