The town of Harvard has used the same flawed method for addressing major infrastructure investments for decades. This method relies on the appointment of committees chosen with a specific task in mind, populated by volunteers. The flaw is that the pool of volunteers is almost always people who have a passion for the project and a predetermined outcome in mind.
This was true of the town center sewer project, which took 30 years to bring to fruition and was finally completed at a fraction of its original anticipated cost. It was true of the Town Hall project, which stalled when the committee requested 30 percent more money than budgeted and was ultimately completed under budget.
Similarly, the town needs to find a better way to address the kindergarten wing and other issues at Hildreth Elementary School. We can find a solution that will meet the needs of the students at a cost that we can afford. It’s time to vote no on the all-new school and get to work on a better way to get the job done.
