Underground Railroad exhibit at library
Visit an exhibit about Lewis Hayden and the Underground Railroad on display on the top floor of the library in the hallway outside Volunteers Hall. This exhibit is on loan from Boston’s Commonwealth Museum. Hayden was born into slavery, escaped via the Underground Railroad, and became instrumental in the struggle for dignity and equal rights in 19th-century Boston.
Mud season and Harvard trails
Since mud season has started early this year, and with the ground vulnerable to potholes, rutting, and erosion as it thaws, the Harvard Conservation Commission asks that horseback riders and bicyclists stay off town trails until they firm up. Trail walkers and runners are advised that some sections may be impassable with mud and water and that traffic skirting wet spots widens muddy areas, so staying on the existing trail or rock-hopping is best. A good trail option at this time of year is the running track through the woods at Harvard Park. It is open to all users and is built with drainage and a compacted surface.
When the ground is drier, horseback riding and biking will be permitted on the primary (yellow) trails unless otherwise marked. Fields are protected for wildlife and agricultural use, so pass around the periphery of fields if there is no trail. Rowing program for grades 6 and 7
Bare Hill Rowing Association will offer a 4-week after-school rowing program for Bromfield sixth- and seventh-graders at Bare Hill Pond starting Monday, April 23. Participants will learn to scull in single-person boats, be introduced to the land training used by the competitive team, and have the opportunity to participate in the “Bare Hill Fun Regatta.” Sixth-graders will practice Mondays and Wednesdays; seventh-graders will practice Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Enrollment is limited to six participants per session. Registration will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis based on date and time of online registration. HES kindergarten registration open
Kindergarten registration is now open at Hildreth Elementary School. Details of the registration process are at http://hildreth.psharvard.org. The process includes:
- Submitting an Intent to Enroll form by March 1.
- Scheduling an appointment with the counselor and nurse the week of March 5.
- Scheduling an appointment for screening on Thursday, March 22.

New art exhibit will open at old library
The Harvard Cultural Collaborative announces that a new exhibit, “Local Color,” will open Saturday, March 3, at the old library, 7 Fairbank Street. The exhibit will feature works by local artists Judith Schutzman and Judy Warner. Come meet the artists and see their works at an opening reception March 3, 3 to 5 p.m.
ERGON fitness classes offered for adults
Bare Hill Rowing will offer adult fitness classes using the ergometer (an indoor rower) at the Bromfield School. No previous experience is necessary. First-timers as well as cardio enthusiasts looking for a new challenge are welcome. The five-week session will start Monday, Feb. 26, with classes on Monday and Thursday evenings, 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Enrollment options include five or 10 classes.
