Between Nov. 25 and Dec. 8, the Harvard Fire Department responded to one brush fire, one car accident, and two fire officer calls. Lt. Andrew Perry conducted 10 oil burner/oil tank inspections, 10 liquid propane inspections, eight smoke/carbon monoxide alarm inspections, five fire safety inspections of properties that hold a liquor license, two fire alarm inspections, and one residential sprinkler inspection.
Sunday, Nov. 25
A Still River Road resident called at 3:15 p.m. requesting assistance after a smoke detector went off. Lt. Bill Barton responded. The homeowner had reset the detector when he arrived. Barton checked the house with a handheld gas meter, found all readings were normal, and helped the homeowner clean the detector.
Thursday, Nov 29
At 1:47 p.m. four firefighters responded to an Ayer Road business and a report of a fire in the mulch next to the building. The fire had been extinguished when the firefighters arrived. The firefighters checked the area for hot spots with a thermal-imaging camera and wet down the area with foam, which suppresses fire by coating the fuel.
Sunday, Dec. 2
A chirping carbon monoxide detector brought Lt. Barton to Littleton County Road at 8:21 p.m. He checked the house with the gas meter; all readings were normal. He cleaned and reset the detector, and it began to work normally.
Friday, Dec. 7
Six firefighters responded to a single-car crash on Lancaster County Road at 10:31 p.m. When they arrived, the single occupant was out of the vehicle, which had come to rest on its side. The firefighters contained leaking fluids with an absorbent and cleaned up broken glass. The ambulance crew evaluated the driver and took him to Nashoba Valley Medical Center. The car was towed from the scene.
Fire Department Factoid
At its holiday party Dec. 6, the department celebrated four firefighters for milestone service anniversaries. Lt. Greg Harrod has been a Harvard firefighter for 30 years; Lead Engineer Brian Perwak has served for 20 years; and Harvard Firefighters Association President Lt. Bill Barton and S.A.F.E. (Student Awareness of Fire Education) coordinator Bill Berthoud were each honored for 10 years of service.
