The Council on Aging is donating 32 lap-sized afghans to local women’s shelters: Orchard Street in Leominster and Transitions in Ayer and Fitchburg. The project is the outgrowth of a knitting group started last winter by Reba Maisel, former owner of the Fiber Loft. Participants decided they wanted to make items for charity, and after much discussion, the women decided to knit squares and assemble them into lap robes. The Harvard Woman’s Club already had some knitted squares ready to be combined into the throws. Maisel contacted Plymouth Yarn Company in Pennsylvania and received what she called “a beautiful assortment of yarn to get us started.” The Fiber Loft generously supplied materials at cost, and members of the group supplied yarn as well. The warm, colorfully designed small afghans will be distributed in time for the holidays.
