The Bromfield varsity boys soccer team continued its undefeated streak this week with two wins. The Trojans won 3–0 Monday, Oct.16, against Oakmont in Ashburnham. On Wednesday, Oct. 18, they shut out Littleton 7–0 at home.
During the first game of the week, against Oakmont, junior Charlie Pappas made two goals in the first eight minutes of play. Senior Ryell Deruijter scored the third and final goal.
In their senior day game against Littleton, senior Kyle Schoenberg scored the first two goals within the opening 10 minutes of the game, assisted each time by senior Riley Fitzsimmons. Schoenberg’s goals were followed by a third toward the end of the first quarter by Pappas on an assist from junior John Allen. In the second half, Fitzsimmons made an unassisted goal of his own and was joined by senior Jack Armstrong, senior Rory VanDorpe, and Deruijter, who each made one assisted goal. Senior goalie Austin Franklin made five saves, helping deliver the team’s 11th shutout of the season.

It was a sunny, clear afternoon, “a good senior day,” said Coach Tom Hill. The names of the team’s 14 departing seniors hung from the Harvard Park cyclone fence next to Lancaster County Road. The goals scored by seniors Schoenberg and VanDorpe were their first of the season, drawing cheers from their teammates. “This is a very unselfish team,” said Hill after the game. “We had a lot of nice goals and a lot of nice assists.” He had special praise for Schoenberg’s play. “He’s a good inside player, very unselfish,” said Hill. “It was nice to see him get a chance to score a couple of goals of his own.”
After the matches, Bromfield led the Mid-Wach League’s Division D in both scoring and goalkeeping. The top scorers in the division were Pappas with 13 goals and seven assists, Armstrong with 10 goals and 11 assists, and Deruijter with 11 goals and four assists. Austin Franklin led the league in goalkeeping with only two goals allowed out of 11 games played. His goals-allowed average was 0.18.
The team’s Mid-Wach League Division D record was 9-0 following the two victories. The Trojans were scheduled to play next in Tyngsborough Oct. 23 and against Worcester at home Oct. 25, which Hill predicted would be a tough contest. After that, the district championships await.
