I am writing so that everyone will understand what’s going on with the UNICEF effort in town. For the past three years our family has run the UNICEF effort at Halloween to raise money for those less fortunate than ourselves.
As many of you know, there are children around the world who suffer from extreme poverty, lack of nutrition, lack of access to basic health care like immunizations, and so on. The money that is raised by the children in our town goes to help children around the world. This year we are targeting the money we raise for UNICEF to help those in Mexico affected by last month’s earthquake and to Puerto Rico for those devastated by Hurricane Maria. To date there have already been some incredible efforts in our town, including a lemonade stand conceived and operated by one child. Mr. Mackie has challenged the various sixth-grade homerooms to see which can raise the most money, and a few children in the middle school have gone to Hildreth Elementary School to do presentations and hand out UNICEF boxes. We also want to acknowledge the Harvard Press for running an ad each week and the General Store for graciously taking it upon themselves to create a Halloween night fundraiser for families and their children to have their picture taken in costume for a small donation.
That so many people are willing to do so much to help others that they don’t even know around the world speaks to our community and makes me proud to live in Harvard. Thanks for the efforts to date. We hope this will be the best UNICEF fundraiser yet. If you have not yet picked up a box for your child, they are still available at the library, the General Store, or in the principals’ offices at the Bromfield School and Hildreth Elementary School. Your children can collect coins at home from relatives and from neighbors. Then on Halloween night, they should bring their boxes to the parking lot of the General Store to add to our giant UNICEF box. Thanks all!
