For 1 percent of the town’s budget, retired Harvard teachers have been betrayed by the selectmen who voted to terminate their health care insurance that has been in place since 1972.
For 1 percent of the budget, teachers have been searching frantically for information to find out if they would be covered by their doctors with new insurance. Many will be forced to search for new clinics and unknown doctors.
For 1 percent of the town’s budget, retirees wrote letters to the selectmen that the selectmen read back to us at their Aug. 22 meeting. There was no discussion of unintended outcomes. No dialogue took place. Teachers voted unanimously against termination.
For 1 percent of the town’s budget, teachers who are in their 70s and 80s will receive fewer benefits, more deductibles, and increased premiums on a fixed income.
Teachers who served in our schools for many years have been thrown under the school bus to save the town 1 percent of its budget.
