Monty Tech to hold college/career fair
Area high-school students and their parents are invited to attend the Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School’s 11th annual College & Career Fair 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, in the school cafeteria. Representatives from approximately 90 two- and four-year colleges and universities, technical, business, and military schools, as well as labor unions, will be on hand to answer questions about post-secondary educational and career opportunities.
Students are invited to enter a drawing to win a new laptop. Also, the first 50 students attending will receive free movie passes.
Monty Tech is located at 1050 Westminster Street (Route 2A) at the Fitchburg-Westminster line.
Literacy organization seeks volunteer tutors
Literacy Volunteers of the Montachusett Area will hold information sessions for prospective volunteers 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19; Tuesday, Oct. 10; and Wednesday, Oct. 18. The organization promotes literacy by providing free, confidential, and individualized tutoring to adults in basic literacy and English for speakers of other languages. To become a tutor, interested persons are asked to attend 18 hours of training and commit to tutoring an adult for at least 2 hours per week for 9 to 12 months. Bargains in the Belfry shop opens for fall
Bargains in the Belfry, which resells lightly used men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, will open for the season Sunday, Oct. 1, so now is a good time to clean out your closets. The shop will be open Tuesdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and first and third Sundays 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The shop is located in the “belfry” of the Harvard Unitarian Universalist Church, on the Common. Entrance is through the side door, near the front of the church. Items for consignment or donation may be left, with a note with name and phone number, in the church office, or outside the Bargains door, or brought to the shop during hours of operation. Ambulance Service holds classes for EMTs
The Harvard Ambulance Service will hold classes for adult EMTs starting Sunday, Oct. 1. Classes will be Sundays noon to 4 p.m. and Thursdays 6 to 10 p.m. The cost for Harvard residents is $500; cost for nonresidents seeking their EMT certification is $1,450. CPC now accepting applications
Harvard’s Community Preservation Committee (CPC) is accepting funding applications for fiscal 2019. CPC funds support projects to protect open space, develop recreational facilities, preserve historical sites, and create affordable housing. Symphony Pro Musica to hold auditions
Symphony Pro Musica (SPM) invites musicians to audition for its upcoming 35th-anniversary season. Music director Mark Churchill will hold auditions in Hudson on Monday, Sept. 11, and by appointment later in September. Players of all orchestra instruments are encouraged to audition; in particular, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, and all strings are needed. Join the Glean Team!
Make a difference in just 90 minutes a month. The Glean Team is a volunteer group that picks up food donated by Roche Bros. in Acton and delivers it to a food pantry or shelter in the Devens and Clinton areas. Pickups are done weekday mornings; it takes 60 to 90 minutes to pick up and deliver to one of the locations. Our only requirements are a strong back and a car with good cargo area (hatchback or SUV). Each year Harvard’s Cultural Council funds a wide variety of activities, including community gatherings, plays, festivals, arts and science education, and other projects focusing on local history, diversity, restoration, and preservation. Volunteers needed for radio reading service
Worcester-based Audio Journal, a nonprofit radio reading service for visually impaired and print-disabled individuals, is looking for volunteers to read newspapers, magazines, and other printed materials from its radio station on West Boylston Street, Worcester. Applications are welcome from individuals who enjoy reading aloud and have approximately three hours to spare, once a month, at weekends. Arbor Day Foundation offers free trees
Anyone who joins the Arbor Day Foundation this month will receive 10 free trees as part of the foundation’s Trees for America program. The trees are selected based on location to yield year-round benefits, including spring flowers, summer shade, autumn color, winter berries, and nesting sites for songbirds.
The 6- to 12-inch trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting and are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced at no charge. Easy-to-follow planting instructions are enclosed with the shipment. New Arbor Day Foundation members also receive “The Tree Book,” with information about tree care.

There is still booth space available at the October 7 Flea Market. Be part of one of Harvard’s signature events and sell some of those items that are just taking up space in your attic or basement. Canoe/kayak guide available
Whether you’re an experienced paddler or a beginner looking for a safe family adventure, the new 120-page, pocket-sized Nashua River Canoe and Kayak Guide will be a valuable tool. The guide is produced by the Nashua River Watershed Association and provides information on the Nashua River and its major tributaries. In full color, it contains information on launch locations, river hazards, what to expect on each segment of the rivers, and 16 river maps. The guide is available for purchase ($16) at the NRWA Resource Center at 592 Main Street in Groton or online at www.NashuaRiverWatershed.org, where you can also learn more about the NRWA’s work to provide water and land protection and environmental education programs to 32 communities.
