The Bromfield varsity boys soccer team won its first four games of the season against St. Peter-Marian, Douglas, Lunenburg, and Nashoba Regional in recent weeks. With a strong defense, Bromfield held the first two opponents scoreless (6–0 and 7–0 respectively) and gave up only one and two goals to Lunenburg (8–1) and Nashoba (3–2), respectively. Bromfield is currently first in the Mid-Wach League’s Division D.
Despite losing a dozen seniors last year, including eight starters, the boys team has dominated its competition at the start of the season and is undefeated. The team’s coach, Tom Hill, explained how the strength of this year’s team lies in its enthusiasm. “I feel we have done very, very well because a lot of them play during the off-season and are really motivated for this year,” Hill said in an interview this past week.

When asked about other strengths and weaknesses, Hill responded, “I think we are a pretty balanced team. Goal scoring is certainly a strength, and we do have a pretty good, solid defense. We don’t have the depth we had last year, but overall I think we’re playing very well as a team, very unselfishly.” This unselfishness leads the team to work together to win games with goals being scored by a variety of players. “There are a lot of people making goals so it’s pretty hard to shut us down,” Hill said.
According to Hill, Ryell DeRuijter leads the team for goals and Jack Armstrong leads the team for assists. Jack Armstrong and Riley Fitzsimmons are team co-captains this year. The team’s next game was scheduled to take place Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. at Maynard High School.
