Police made 17 traffic stops during the week, resulting in seven citations and 10 verbal warnings. Police also helped one motorist with a disabled vehicle and one with a lockout, and responded to one request for a cooking fire. The ambulance crew responded to six medical emergencies and took five people to the hospital, four with Advanced Life Support on board.
Tuesday, Aug. 15
At 1:14 p.m. a caller reported a small brown and white dog running loose in the center of town. The animal control officer was notified. A resident called at 4:22 p.m. to report that a bike tied to a tree across from her house on Tahanto Trail had been there for two weeks. Police logged the call. At 5:25 p.m. Boxborough police asked Harvard police to assist with a request from the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families to remove three children from their parents at the Boxboro Regency Hotel. A caller reported a truckful of teenagers driving erratically on Murray Lane. Police were unable to locate the vehicle. At 11:27 p.m. another Murray Lane resident called about a parked car at the end of the road near the circle. The vehicle was gone when police arrived.
Wednesday, Aug. 16
Police received a report of a four-car accident with injuries on Route 2 eastbound at 7:38 a.m. Harvard fire and ambulance personnel responded, and the Harvard ambulance transported two people to Emerson Hospital. At 8:56 a.m. a woman called to report she had lost control of her lawn mower, and she was unable to move it from the middle of Stow Road. An officer provided the necessary assistance.
Thursday, Aug. 17
A Jacob Gates Road resident called at 8:03 a.m. to report a suspicious person in a parked car. The resident said he approached the man and asked him what he was doing. The man replied that he was a vendor but refused to show any identification. The car was gone when police arrived. A caller reported a tree down on South Shaker Road at 10:16 a.m. Officers notified the Department of Public Works, which subsequently removed the tree. At 1:35 p.m. another caller from South Shaker Road reported that two suspicious vehicles had been in the area every day for the past week. Police logged the call. At 2:52 p.m. police received a 911 call from a physician’s office on Ayer Road where a woman was allegedly threatening staff. They arrested Julia Chisley, 62, of Ayer for assault and threatening to commit a crime.
Friday, Aug. 18
A Bolton Road resident called at 7:31 a.m. to say he was concerned about a hot air balloon flying close to his house. Police told the resident that a hot air balloon festival was going on in Hudson and that there was no need for concern. At 9:34 a.m. someone reported an owl that appeared to be in distress off to the side of Still River Road near St. Theresa’s church. An environmental officer in the area investigated the incident but did not follow up with Harvard police. A wallet was turned in to the police station at 2:07 p.m. Police contacted the owner and returned the wallet.
Saturday, Aug. 19
At 8:56 a.m. a caller reported a bike left at the old library sometime during the skateboarding event the first weekend in August. The bike can be claimed by calling the police. Police were called to Pond Road at 11:51 a.m. for a complaint about parked vehicles. Officers said that the Harvard Farmers Market did not mark off parking areas appropriately, and as a result, marketgoers had made some poor parking choices. But the police are not yet equipped to give out parking tickets, and since none of the vehicles posed a road hazard, they could not take any action. At 12:41 p.m. a vehicle attempting to turn around in a driveway backed into another vehicle on Littleton County Road. The driver of the first vehicle was charged with failure to use care and caution while backing up. No injuries were reported. A Haskell Lane resident called to complain about loud music coming from a nearby house at 11:41 p.m. Police asked the nearby resident to turn down the music. About a half-hour later, police received another complaint and returned to the house and asked that the music be turned off for the night.
Sunday, Aug. 20
At 10:26 a.m. a three-vehicle accident occurred on Still River Road at Bellevue Cemetery. A car slowed to turn left into the cemetery, the car behind it stopped, and a motorcycle behind the second car could not stop in time to avoid a collision. The motorcycle hit the rear left corner of the car in front of it, bounced into the car that was turning left, and slid for some distance, causing serious injury to the motorcycle driver. He was taken to Emerson Hospital and cited for following too closely. The first vehicle was towed from the scene, the second vehicle sustained only minor damage, and the motorcycle was removed by a friend of the injured driver. A caller reported a tree down on some wires on Blanchard Road at 5:31 p.m. National Grid took care of the situation.
Monday, Aug. 21
A caller reported a car that narrowly missed hitting a tractor-trailer traveling southbound on Ayer Road at 11:16 a.m. The vehicle was gone when police arrived. The mother of a 2-year-old child called police at 2:31 p.m. and said she could not find the child anywhere in the house. Police arrived at the house and called for a K-9 unit to aid in the search because the house was very large. A few minutes after police arrived, the mother found the child, who had crawled into a portable crib and fallen asleep. At 4:05 p.m. a man reported that the female occupant of a silver sedan in the parking lot of the Harvard General Store was yelling at him, and he thought she could be under the influence of liquor. The car left before police arrived. They searched the area but didn’t find the car. A caller on Ann Lees Road reported a juvenile setting off fireworks at 8:17 p.m. Police checked the area but found nothing.
