Help spruce up the old library!
The Harvard Cultural Collaborative (HCC) will soon open the doors to the town’s new culture and community center at the old library building, 7 Fairbank Street. But before HCC can start to book courses, concerts, and art shows, cleaning and freshening is needed. All are invited to help. HCC will supply drinks, snacks, tunes, and supplies. To volunteer, email HarvardCCvolunteers@gmail.com with the time slot that works for you. If you can’t do a full shift, just indicate what hours will work.

American Heart Assoc. courses offered
Always On Call Health Services®, Inc. will offer two courses on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 285 Central Street in Leominster. Registration is required in advance at 978-537-9900 ext. 114.
- Basic Life Support for the Health Care Provider CPR, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; for those who work in the health care field, day care providers, and nursing school students.
- Heartsaver First Aid, 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Summer reading program ends
The library’s summer reading program has officially ended, and readers are reminded to stop counting hours. Those who have read more than 30 hours and earned a bookplate may come by the library any day from Wednesday, Aug. 30 (the first day of school in Harvard) through Oct. 15 to choose the library book in which the bookplate will go. Please note that readers do not have to come in to the library to confirm hours; we can access online accounts or review paper logs.
Community Harvest Project seeks volunteer leaders
Community Harvest Project (CHP) will host a training session for volunteer team leaders at its orchard at 115 Prospect Hill Road Tuesday, Aug. 29, from 9 a.m. to noon. Leaders are needed to work with groups that will visit the farm in September and October. Team leaders work with CHP staff and interns to help coordinate and direct the work of small groups of volunteers in picking, sorting, and packaging apples for donation to hunger relief organizations throughout central and eastern Massachusetts.
Apples will be harvested from September 1 through October 15 from 9 a.m. to noon several days a week. Volunteer leaders may help out one day a week or more. This is a great opportunity for retirees, at-home parents, or anyone looking to help our community. For anyone interested, CHP asks that you visit the North Grafton farm one time in August to see team leaders in action and come to the training in Harvard August 29. Video editing contest
Central Mass Skate Festival’s media team offers a unique open-source editing contest for the general public, whether or not people attended and/or filmed at the event. The team compiles and prescreens the footage, then makes it available for anyone to download and edit, following a few general guidelines. There are cash and gear prizes for the best and most popular submissions. Some of last year’s winners can be found at http://skatecentralma.com/media. Low-number license plate lottery now accepting applicants
The Registry of Motor Vehicles reminds residents that applications for the 2017 low-number plate lottery are now being accepted. Customers may enter the lottery online by visiting https://secure.rmv.state.ma.us/myPlateLotto/. Mail-in applications are available for download at www.MassRMV.com or at any registry service center location. Applications must be received online or postmarked by Aug. 25,. There is no fee to apply, but there is a registration fee for winners.
This year, there are 162 plates that are part of the lottery. Available plate numbers this year include 4455, 8888, 33E, 8J, M88, and X1. Visit the RMV’s website or follow @MassRMV on Twitter for upcoming details on the date, time, and location of the event.
DPW announces street closures
DPW Director Tim Kilhart has announces that beginning Monday, Aug. 21, the DPW will be replacing two culverts on Littleton Road between Fairbank Street and Whitney Road. Littleton Road will be closed during that day for the construction but will be open at the end of the day. The culverts are being replaced in preparation for the repaving of Littleton Road.
