During the week police made 16 traffic stops, which resulted in nine citations and seven verbal warnings. They also helped three motorists get into their inadvertently locked cars. The ambulance crew responded to seven medical emergencies and took six people to the hospital, three with Advanced Life Support on board. One person refused medical treatment or transport to the hospital.
Tuesday, May 16
Someone called at 8:31 a.m. to report concerns about a dog in a potentially hot car parked at the General Store. An officer went to the store, spoke to the owner, and determined that the dogs were fine. A patrol officer called the station at 10:02 p.m. to request that the Department of Public Works be asked to sweep dirt that was causing a hazard at Oak Hill and Cleaves Hill roads. Someone called 911 at 10:39 p.m. with suspicions about a car parked in front of the Bromfield School with its lights turning on and off. The car was gone when an officer arrived to check it out.
Wednesday, May 17
An Old Shirley Road resident called at 4:35 p.m. to log a report about a man who she said repeatedly drives by her house revving his car engine. At 5:27 p.m. an officer on patrol stopped to give a ride to a woman walking on Massachusetts Avenue, who was going to a friend’s in Harvard some distance away.
Thursday, May 18
A motorist called at 4:30 p.m. to report that another car had passed his on the left at a stop sign 10 minutes earlier. The vehicle was not in the area when police arrived to investigate.
Friday, May 19
An Abbot Lane resident called at 6:43 a.m. to report seeing a black bear with a tag in its ear in her backyard. An officer called the animal control officer and the Massachusetts Environmental Police, who said they did not need to be notified about a tagged bear unless it was a safety concern. Someone called at 2:11 p.m. to report concerns about a man who appeared to be confused sitting on the side of Ayer Road. An officer located and spoke to the man, a Stow resident who had visible injuries. The man said he had been struck by a car in Boxborough the previous night but had refused medical treatment. He said he was on his way to a friend’s in Townsend and had just stopped to rest. The officer gave the man a ride as far as McDonald’s in Ayer. A West Bare Hill Road resident called to report that someone had stolen his mailbox. State police called at 3:44 p.m. asking Harvard officers to log a minor two-car accident that had just taken place on the northbound offramp of Route 2 westbound. A man stopped at the station at 4:01 p.m. to report being bitten by a dog on Abbot Lane. The animal control officer was notified. A Haskell Lane resident called at 4:42 p.m. to report that a black bear had just gone through the yard. The Environmental Police were notified. Boxborough police called at 6:53 p.m. to request backup in responding to a domestic incident in that town. One person was subsequently arrested. Someone called at 8:49 p.m. to report that a vehicle parked facing traffic on Bolton Road was difficult for passing motorists to see. An officer spoke to the owner and asked that the car be moved.
Saturday, May 20
A Littleton County Road resident called at 6:59 a.m. to report a German shepherd running loose in the area. The animal was gone when police arrived, but the animal control officer was notified. Someone called at 11:28 a.m. to report that a red motorcycle was speeding back and forth on Prospect Hill Road. An officer located the vehicle, stopped it, and gave the driver a verbal warning.
Sunday, May 21
At 11:18 a.m. a West Bare Hill Road resident called to say that upon returning home from vacation she discovered that a tree and a mailbox had been stolen from her property.
Monday, May 22
A motorist called 911 at 1:51 a.m. to report being involved in an accident on Poor Farm Road. Police say the car had gone off the roadway, struck a utility pole, and landed on some wires. The driver, who was not injured, was cited for speeding. The car was towed. Homes in the area were without power until about 6 a.m. Someone stopped at the station at 6:34 a.m. to report a slippery substance in the roadway from town center to the police station. Police say that the the hydraulic fluid line on a trash-pickup truck had ruptured, but the truck, after making a stop at the Bromfield School, had headed toward Route 2 on Mass. Ave. and then on to Shirley. (see “Hydraulic fluid leak causes a Monday morning mess” on Page 1). A Blanchard Road resident called at 7:32 a.m. to report that she had heard someone enter the basement of her home. She left the house and waited for an officer to arrive, but after a search of the home, the officer found nothing suspicious. A West Bare Hill Road resident called at 10:26 p.m. to report concerns about a vehicle that had pulled into and then out of his driveway. The caller said it appeared to be an Uber car but looked suspicious because its tag was unlike those typically found on Uber cars.
