The Trojans easily defeated Quabbin Regional High School, on Monday, April 24, and West Boylston, on Friday, April 28, with both of the opposing teams being very young. The girls ended matches 4–1 and 5–0, respectively.
The Trojans’ bus got lost finding Quabbin Regional High School in Barre, as it was the first time the girls had played there, and the match was delayed by nearly an hour, making it a memorable first trip to Quabbin. The Quabbin team had five starting seniors graduate last year; as a result, Bromfield won all the matches easily except third singles, where senior Joanna Young had some difficulty controlling the ball. Their match drew out long points, but Young’s opponent was more consistent and a little faster around the court. Junior Sarah Moore, who had injured her shoulder at the beginning of the season, joined in on first doubles for her first match this season in order to ease her back into playing and checking to make sure her shoulder was all set. She seemed to have very little trouble, winning 6–1, 6–2, with senior and captain Ariel Jones-Mollod.
The match on Friday against West Boylston was also “fairly lopsided,” wrote Coach Chris Holmes in an email, as the other team had four eighth-graders in its starting lineup. It was the first home game for Bromfield, setting a record for the latest home opener date, which added some excitement. Junior Abby Zajac made her singles debut in third singles and easily won her match 6–2, 6–1. Eighth-grader Leimalia Tratnyek, a great new addition to the team, continued to play smoothly, winning 6–4, 6–1. Sophomore Olivia Noyes has also clearly improved, Holmes said, and “it is becoming increasingly clear that she has become a valuable member of the starting lineup.”
Bromfield is currently first in its division. In the upcoming matches against Nashoba and Notre Dame, Holmes predicted tighter play. Both schools have strong teams and a history of close matches with Bromfield.
