Bromfield’s varsity baseball team defeated the Tyngsborough Tigers Friday, April 28, at Tyngsborough High School by a score of 5–3.
The game started slowly. In the top of the first inning, the Trojans had players on first and third but failed to plate a run. Tyngsborough got two hits and one run, making the score at the end of the first inning 1–0.
Neither team scored in the second inning, but in the third, Bromfield senior Sam Rosenfeld got a hit and junior Ian Hanson drove him home with a two-run home run. The score at the end of the third inning was 3–1 in favor of Bromfield.
Tyngsborough got one run in the fourth inning, leaving Bromfield in the lead. In the fifth, sophomores Andrew Hill and Alex Magan pushed the Trojans further into the lead, 5–3. Hill had an infield hit and Magan delivered a double. The game left Bromfield with a 2–2 record and Tyngsborough with 4–3.
“We had a strong pitching performance from Kindred Atwood,” said Bromfield head Coach Lonnie Quirion. Sophomore Atwood pitched the first six innings and struck out eight. Junior Jackson Harrigan replaced Atwood in the final inning and closed the game by recording the final three outs.
Bromfield and Tyngsborough each had five hits in the game. Bromfield had three errors and Tyngsborough had one.
The Trojans won again the next day, Saturday, April 29, against Nashoba Technical High School by a score of 13–2, placing the Trojans at the top of their league with an overall record of 3–2 for the season.
The team’s losses came in their first two games of the season. Explaining the jump from these games to the most recent, high-scoring ones, Quirion said, “We struggled defensively in our first two games, but over the last three games we’ve played much better in the field. Improving our defense has been a priority at practice for us and hopefully we’ll continue to get better.”
Bromfield’s next game was scheduled for Tuesday, May 2, against Lunenburg at home.
