Lions Club offers student awards
he Harvard Lions Club invites Bromfield seniors to apply for the club’s Community Service Awards, which are given annually to students who demonstrate civic responsibility to perform community service to benefit the citizens of Harvard. Bargains in the Belfry annual sale
The annual end-of-season 50 percent off sale at Bargains in the Belfry, the consignment shop at the Harvard Unitarian Church, starts Sunday, March 19. The shop, which resells lightly used clothing, is open each Tuesday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on first and third Sundays 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is located in the belfry of the Harvard Unitarian Universalist Church. Entrance is through the side door, near the front of the church. Proceeds from the shop benefit the church and the community. Call 978-772-9245 for more information.
Dog licenses
All dogs in the town of Harvard must be licensed annually by April 1. Puppies must be licensed by six months of age. New older dogs and those belonging to new residents must be licensed within 30 days. There are penalties for residents who do not register their dogs.
You may register dogs at the town clerk’s office. You will need a valid rabies certificate and, if applicable, a certificate of spaying/neutering.
Fees are $15 for spayed females, $25 for unspayed females, $15 for neutered males, $25 for unneutered males, $45 for three or four dogs, $65 for five to 10 dogs, $100 for more than 10 dogs, no charge if owner is 70+ years old.

Devens noise reports
Loud booms on March 8 served to remind residents that winter is over, and military training at Devens has resumed. The booms were from demolition training exercises. No activities are planned over the next week, but demolition training exercises are scheduled every day from March 24 through March 31. Monthly reports are available online at www.devens.army.mil/noise-report/noise_report.html, and the Press will publish information from the reports as they become available.
Annual Lions Club citrus fruit sale
The Harvard Lions Club will hold its 26th annual citrus fruit sale, selling fresh ruby red grapefruit and Valencia oranges from Florida in 20-pound and 40-pound boxes at two locations.
- Transfer Station: Saturdays, April 8 and 15, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Wednesdays, April 12 and 19, 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.
- Town center: Saturdays and Sundays, April 8-9 and 15-16, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Bears are out and about
The Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife advises residents who live in areas where bears have been spotted (such as Harvard) to take down their bird feeders. Warmer temperatures over the past few weeks have coaxed black bears from their dens, and they are now actively seeking food. MassWildlife recommends removing all outdoor food sources, including bird feeders, garbage cans, and open compost. Bee hives, chickens, and livestock should also be protected. Loaves & Fishes Donation Drive
Everyone who attends Harvard’s April 1 Annual Town Meeting is encouraged to bring a donation for the Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry. The most needed items include cereal, canned pasta, boxed rice, jelly, pancake mix and syrup, ketchup, mayo, canned foods (pasta, baked beans, chili, tomato products, fruit cocktail), hearty beef and chicken soups, pull-up diapers, feminine care products, shampoo and conditioner, toothpaste and tooth brushes.
Ayer-Shirley Youth Football and Cheering
Last year Ayer-Shirley’s high school football program agreed to include Bromfield students interested in high school football and cheerleading. The Ayer-Shirley Youth Football program now welcomes younger Harvard students, grades K-8, and invites them to attend an open house on Wednesday, March 22, 6 to 8 p.m., at the Ayer-Shirley High School cafeteria to learn more about the football and cheerleading programs.
Donate your used soccer equipment
Bromfield athletes Cole and Kamryn Stecyk are joining forces with Let’s Play It Forward to collect gently used soccer equipment—balls, cleats, jerseys, etc. Let’s Play It Forward is a nonprofit organization started by a group of New York teens. It collects and donates used sports equipment to children and organizations in need throughout the country and around the world. On Saturdays, March 18 and 25, and April 1, the Stecyks will be collecting equipment at the Transfer Station from 9 a.m. to noon. They can also pick up from your home; email cbstecyk@charter.net.
