Habitat for Humanity North Central Massachusetts will kick off the start of the spring building season with its annual breakfast to be held on May 3, 2017, at the First Parish of Bolton from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. The annual breakfast is an awareness and “friend-raising” event and provides an opportunity for the community to meet Habitat’s newest homeowners and to learn more about current building and renovation projects in the region. Habitat for Humanity North Central MA will also honor its long-term volunteers at the breakfast.
There is no cost to attend this event but, reservations are required as seating is limited. Please visit the Habitat website to reserve your spot.
Award-winning author Michael J. Tougias will be the keynote speaker for the Breakfast. Tougias is a New York Times bestselling author and co-author of 24 books. Among his bestsellers is the novel “The Finest Hours,” a work recounting the dramatic Coast Guard rescue of the crew of two ships stranded off Cape Cod. The WWII surplus vessels were unwisely kept in service and broken in two by a raging Nor’easter that swept the coast in 1952. The fascinating story was made into a movie in 2016.
Tougias agreed to be speaker for the breakfast because one of the Coast Guard servicemen involved in the rescue was Stow, MA homeowner Edward Mason, a recent partner for Habitat NCM’s Critical Home Repair program. Launched in 2015, the agency’s Critical Home Repair Program is a home preservation program that provides needed interior and exterior repairs for low-income homeowners, enabling them to maintain a safe, decent, and affordable place to live. The program focuses on safety, security, accessibility, weatherization, and keeping houses up to city codes. Mr. Mason will be honored posthumously for his years of military service at the breakfast. Through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat NCM builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses alongside our homeowner partner families. Habitat NCM also operates the Leominster ReStore which raises funds through the sale of discounted or recycled materials and furniture.
