The Bromfield ski team, which consists of skiers from Bromfield and North Middlesex Regional High School, ended its third meet and last giant slalom race on Friday, Jan. 27, in unfavorable, sloshy conditions. The boys ended in second place with a 17–4–0 record (17 wins, 4 losses and no ties), while the girls finished sixth at 7–14–0. In its fourth meet on Tuesday, Jan. 31, the team had better results, with the boys snatching first place, winning the race, and starting the slalom season with a 7–0–0 record. The girls improved, placing fifth with a 2–4–1 record.
At Bromfield’s last giant slalom meet, every boy managed to finish (although not all on their feet), raising the team to fourth place with a 4–3–0 record despite the falls. The girls ended up last because only four skiers finished.
In their most recent meet on Jan. 31, both teams achieved better results. Every skier finished, which is a huge achievement, because as Coach David Bobruff said, “This is the first time we’ve accomplished that in a slalom in several years, if not ever!” The boys team won the race, moving up from second to first place in overall (giant slalom and slalom combined) standings in the league. All seven boys finished within the top 20. Coach Bobruff said that finishing without falls or stops will be key to staying on top for the rest of the season. If everyone has a clean run, he said, “the last two races are ours to win!”
The girls also improved, tying for fifth in their slalom race with Newton South after beating Lowell and Chelmsford in a close race. Sophomore Sage McFarland finished her first slalom race in ninth place, her first top-10 finish, while eighth-grader Sadie Keiran and senior Grace Barton had their best-ever finishes, both finishing in the top 20.
The girls’ overall league standing is sixth with a 9–18–1 record, while the boys are first with a 24–4–0 record.
