Varsity rowers made their annual pilgrimage to the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga Springs, New York, this past weekend. The two-day event is the final regatta of the fall season for Bromfield Acton-Boxborough, with the boys taking the overall third-place trophy in the coxed rowing events, a result calculated by combining the times of the top three 8+ boats along with the top 4+ finish.
Brian DeDominici, the boys varsity coach, said, “The team had lots of racing opportunities and chances to test its skills in different competitive situations, including a hard-fought battle in the first varsity 8 event, where boats finishing in places three through eight were only separated by 4 seconds.” All three boys varsity 8+ boats finished in the top 10 of their races, and the boys first varsity 4+ placed fourth out of 50 crews.
The varsity girl rowers matched the boys’ results, with all three 8+ boats finishing among the top 10 and their 4+ placing fourth. The girls first varsity 8+ was ninth out of a field of 47.
“We continue to be one of the few public high school programs breaking into the top 10, so you can’t ask for much more as a coach,” said Holly Hatton, the varsity girls coach.
The girls first varsity 4+ came in fourth, just two seconds from the bronze medal, out of a field of 45 crews. “Our Head of the Charles crew that finished in sixth place last weekend in Boston moved up two spots to fourth at the Fish,” said Hatton. “It’s great to see a steady improvement for this fairly new combo.”
