Girls cross-country ends season with two wins; two runners medal at invitational

October 20, 2016

The Bromfield cross-country girls won against Maynard and Murdock, 22–34 and 16–42, respectively, Thursday, Oct. 13, topping the season with their seventh and eighth straight victories. Their growth as runners has been tremendous over the season, growth that was demonstrated again in the Bob McIntyre Twilight Invitational Saturday, Oct. 15, where three girls ran their fastest pace, two girls attained personal records, and two girls medaled.

During the Thursday meet, freshman Tessa McClain set a new personal record as she once again took first with 21:08, while teammates Phoebe Carrona and Hannah Beckman followed, finishing in second at 22:22 and fifth at 22:57, snatching the win for the Trojans. Three of the girls, Sage McFarland, Helena Justicz, and Carrona, achieved personal records during their last home meet on the 3.1-mile course on the McCurdy Track and surrounding forest trails.

At the Twilight Invitational on Saturday, the girls continued to impress when both McClain and Captain Eva Xue medaled in their division for placing in the top 25. Xue placed 15th out of 141 with a 7:06-minute per mile pace in the JV girls Division 2, while McClain placed 22nd of 251 with a 6:46-minute per mile pace, again achieving a personal record, in the varsity girls Division 2 race, both 3.1-mile courses. The rest of the girls, competing on 2.1-mile courses, all ran the fastest pace of their season.

The girls completed their league schedule with a record of 5–2 and third place overall in the Midland-Wachusett League’s Division D.
