At local farm stands, freshly picked heaps of sweet corn are gone and the last few tomatoes are rattling around in the bins. Apple picking is also winding down, but there are many varieties of apples available at local orchard stands, and the cushaw and blue Hubbard squashes at Willard Farm are looking for a few strong, adventurous cooks to take them home. Buy local while you can!

Check Facebook page for availability of pick-your-own apples. In the store, Honeycrisp, McIntosh, Cortland, Macoun, Gala, Mutsu, Empire, Golden Delicious, Cameo, and Northern Spy apples. Also in the store are vegetables and winter squash from Brookdale Fruit Farm in Hollis, New Hampshire.
Doe Orchards, 327 Ayer Road
Pick-your-own Macoun, Fuji, Gala, Cortland, McIntosh, Golden and Red Delicious, and Granny Smith apples. At the stand, Honeycrisp, Macoun, Fuji, Gala, Cortland, McIntosh, Ruby Mac, and Golden Delicious apples, as well as pumpkins, gourds, honey, and half gallons of cider.

Westward Orchards, 178 Massachusetts Avenue
Pick-your-own apples and wagon rides are done for the season. In the store, Granny Smith, Roxbury Russet, Empire, Baldwin, Golden Delicious, and Macoun apples, as well as Asian and Bosc pears. Also their own pumpkins, gourds, onions, shallots, winter squash, lettuce, beans, broccoli, carrots, summer squash, zucchini, Swiss chard, kale, peppers, leeks, onions, eggplant, beets, cabbage, tomatoes (including heirloom and cherry), potatoes, and mixed herbs.
Willard Farm, 218 Still River Road
Decorative Indian corn and gourds of all shapes and sizes. Pumpkins and lots of varieties of winter squash, including butternut, acorn, delicata, carnival, buttercup, blue Hubbard, and cushaw. Hot peppers, and a few hot pepper plants in pots, already producing peppers.
