The Bromfield boys lacrosse team (9–9) was unable to fight off the visiting Hudson Hawks (5–13) in last week’s May 19 game at the Depot Road fields in Harvard. The host Trojans lost 9–8.
The game started with three quick goals by Bromfield in the first quarter. Hudson was able to net two of its own goals to keep the score close at 3–2 Bromfield at the end of the first quarter.

In the second and third quarters, Bromfield made its presence known in the offensive and defensive ends of the field. Junior Matias Smalanskas won most of the draws, giving the Trojans a quick advantage on the offensive end. Bromfield shared the ball to each of its offenders with fast passes, opening up the middle of the goal area for easy goals in front of the net. The defense also ramped up its play in the second and third quarters, forcing turnovers by Hudson and handing offensive opportunities to Bromfield.
Unfortunately, Bromfield’s confidence and intensity of play faded by the fourth quarter. The team’s two-goal lead slipped away as the Hawks scored three goals in the fourth quarter to take the lead. Bromfield failed to answer with any goals of its own, and Hudson held its lead at 9–8 until the final buzzer.
Austin Temple of Hudson scored the final goal with one minute to go in the game. Hudson’s defense put the heat on Bromfield’s offense, making it a challenge for the Trojans to get near the middle of the offensive end as they had been doing for most of the game. Bromfield players did not adjust their offense and allowed turnovers, costing them the game.
‘Couldn’t get it done’
Bromfield’s head coach, Dan Joyce, was not pleased with the way his team finished the game. Coach Joyce called a timeout with 30 seconds left in the game to write up a play for a goal to tie the game, which Bromfield did not execute. Joyce simply put it, “We couldn’t get it done. …The other team wanted the game more.”
High scorers for Bromfield included junior Ross MacMahon, who scored three goals and had one assist, along with senior Luke Karis, who had two goals.
In its next two games, Bromfield lost one and won one. The Trojans lost to St. Bernard’s on Saturday, May 21, 12–7. Sophomore Matt Thornton netted four goals and had one assist, while junior Ross McMahon had two goals and one assist for Bromfield.
The Trojans beat the Oakmont Regional High School Spartans on Tuesday, May 24, 10–5 to improve their overall record to 9–9.
