The Bromfield boys lacrosse team went into extra time while competing against St. Bernard’s Central Catholic High School at the Lancaster fields on April 14. In overtime, Bromfield freshman Sam Rachman scored the game-winning goal for the Bromfield Trojans. The game winner was one of two Rachman goals.
The game started slowly for the Trojans as the defense had difficulties getting the ball over midfield to start its offense. St. Bernard’s came out fast and strong, controlling the pace of the game with passes the Trojans had a troublesome time keeping track of. In the first half, the Bernardians had more shots on goal than the host Trojans. The visiting team’s offense attacked the net more often than the Trojans, and the Bernardians took an early and easy lead. At the end of the first half St. Bernard’s was ahead 5–2.
Bromfield made its comeback during the fourth quarter, scoring five goals, two of which came from junior Ross MacMahon. Even after Bromfield’s hard-fought comeback, St. Bernard’s found the net with six seconds left in the game to tie it and force overtime. The fourth quarter ended with the score knotted at 7–7.
During overtime, Rachman found the back of the net after a shot from a fellow teammate ricocheted off the goalie and back onto Rachman’s stick. He immediately put the ball past the St Bernard’s goalie to earn the victory for the Trojans.
