Lions Club solicits requests for donations
The Harvard Lions Club has its local nonprofit donation request form on its website, harvardlions.org. Click the menu item titled “Local Donations Application.” The deadline for requests is March 19. Previously the club accepted requests from individuals, but now it is focusing on local nonprofit community groups.
2016 boat lottery
The Parks and Recreation Commission and Harvard’s harbormaster have revised the boat lottery process this year:
- Residents will not be entered in the initial lottery in 2016 if they had a spot in 2015. They will be added to the waiting list and added to the second lottery if spaces are available.
- When the lottery opens, registration will be done via the Parks and Rec website, www.harvardparkandrec.org. No money is required to register, but payment is due by April 18 or your spot will go to the next person on the list.
- Each resident should be in only one lottery; anyone listed in two lotteries will be removed prior to the drawing.
- Only one registration per household is permitted.
- The registrant must be the boat’s owner; registering for neighbors and friends is not permitted.
- Registration numbers are required for boats. Failure to provide an accurate registration number will disqualify that entry.
- Canoe and kayak rack entries must include the requested description details and are limited to one canoe and two kayaks per rack.
Mud season and Harvard trails
Mud season has started early this year and the ground is vulnerable to potholes, rutting, and erosion as it thaws. Horseback riders and bicyclistshould stay off town trails until they firm up. Trail walkers and runners are advised that some sections may be impassable with mud and water and that traffic skirting wet spots widens muddy areas, so staying on the existing trail is important. A good trail option at this time of year is the new running track through the woods at Harvard Park. It is open to all and is built with drainage and a compacted surface.
Come spring and when the ground is drier, horseback riding and biking will be permitted on the primary (yellow) trails unless otherwise marked. Fields are protected for wildlife and agricultural use, so keep that in mind and pass around the periphery of fields if there is no trail.
