The School Committee received a second letter from the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts this week, asking for further changes in the school district’s policy about the recently installed security cameras at the Bromfield School.
The ACLU’s Kade Crockford, who directs the Technology for Liberty project in Boston, urged the district to require a warrant before allowing Harvard police to view any footage from the cameras. She also strongly advised that the cameras not be connected in any way to the Internet unless the town hires an independent security firm to evaluate and audit the system. Nor should live feed from the cameras ever be monitored, Crockford wrote, except during an emergency. The letter also asked for an automatic log to be kept, publicly identifying anyone who looks at the video footage from the cameras.
The School Committee referred the letter to its policy subcommittee for further consideration.
