The Bromfield boys varsity soccer team beat archrival Sutton 2-0 this afternoon in the final game of the Central Mass Division 4 playoffs. The Trojans are now the Central Mass Division 4 champions for the first time in five years and will now move on to the Division 4 State Championship semifinals.

The first of Bromfield’s two goals was scored on a penalty shot by senior Roman Vellante after he was fouled by a Sutton player inside the Sutton penalty box. Junior Omar Al-Homsi scored the second goal in the final two minutes of the game as Sutton blitzed Bromfeld, emptying its end of the field of defensive players. Each goal was greeted by a roar from the roughly 100 Bromfield fans who had made the trip to Nashoba Regional High School to watch the match under overcast skies and chilly 50 degree weather.
At the games end, as the team marched onto the field to accept its trophy, the announcer proclaimed that the win was coach Tom Hills 600th victory in his 37 years of coaching. “We wanted to win this one for the coach as much as for ourselves,” said co-captain Vellante, after the game.
Hill said he was pleased with the outcome. “We had to defeat three good teams [Littleton, Maynard. and Sutton] to win the division title,” he said. But as for the 600 hundred victories, he said with a smile, “I passed that number a couple of games ago.”
The Bromfield boys will now play Monson, the Western Division 4 champion, in the Division 4 State semifinals. The game is scheduled for Tuesday evening, Nov. 17, at Lunenburg High School at 7 p.m.
