After a tough 5–3 loss to Tyngsborough on Monday, the Bromfield varsity girls soccer team was left in third place in the Midland Wachusett C League.
The Trojans faced off against the Tigers on the Tigers’ home field, and tensions ran high as both teams battled for the second-place spot in the league. Referees called numerous free kick penalties, leading to clashes between the teams both on and off the field. At one point officials came close to asking a vocal Tyngsborough coach to leave the game.
Bromfield started off strong in the first half and scored the first goal of the game when senior Sophia Turchetta sprinted down the sideline with the ball and crossed it in front of the goal. Junior Phoebe Aney volleyed the ball past the Tyngsborough goalie into the net.
Soon after the Trojans’ goal, the Tigers also scored, making the score 1–1. Both teams fought to get another goal during the first half, but neither was successful.
Tyngsborough scored two goals early in the second half after kicking the ball over the heads of the Bromfield defense. Determined to come back from the two-goal deficit, Bromfield attacked the ball with increased energy. Sophomore Kaitlin Sundeen passed the ball to fellow sophomore Sarah Moore, who scored. Several minutes later, Moore stole the ball off the feet of a Tyngsborough player, dribbled through the defense, and powered the ball into the net, tying the game.
But in the last 15 minutes of the half, the Tigers scored twice, with their fifth and final goal entering the Trojans’ net as the referee’s whistle blew to signal the end of the game.
Senior goalie Meghanne Fitzsimmons had a busy afternoon, saving most of the over 14 shots taken on the Bromfield net.
The previous week, Bromfield played Gardner on Friday, Sept. 25, and emerged with a 4–0 victory. Bromfield had great offensive presence throughout the game, with 18 total attempts on the Wildcats’ net. Bromfield’s goals were scored by junior Talbot Chipman, who was assisted by senior Kelsey L’Ecuyer; Turchetta, who scored off a punt by Fitzsimmons; Moore, who was assisted by Sundeen; and Turchetta, assisted by Moore.
On Monday, Sept. 21, Bromfield faced Parker Charter School. After a frustrating first half filled with unsuccessful shots, the Trojans were down two goals and knew they would have to play hard during the second half to pull off a win. Turchetta scored Bromfield’s first goal of the game, turning the tide for the Trojans. Shortly after, L’Ecuyer scored a second goal. With a win in sight, Bromfield players put the rest of their energy into the game. Turchetta powered another ball into Parker’s net, and the game ended with a 3–2 win for the Trojans.
Bromfield’s game against Littleton, scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 30, was cancelled. The girls play Friday, Oct. 2, against Maynard, weather permitting, at the Trojan’s home field.
