After a disappointing loss to Douglas last week, the Bromfield boys soccer team was in better form in its next matches, as it trounced last-place Gardner 7–0 on Friday, Sept. 25, and squeaked past Tyngsborough 1–0 at home on Monday, Sept. 28. With two more victories added to their season scorecard, the Trojans remained first in their league, one game ahead of rival Littleton among Wachusett C schools.

Bromfield’s single goal against Tyngsborough was scored in the second half by senior Roman Vellante on a cross by junior Stuart Irwin. Tyngsborough’s goalie had a busy afternoon with an estimated dozen saves, while thanks to a strong Trojan defense led by senior Mark Schwiegershausen, Bromfield’s sophomore goalie, Austin Franklin, was left relatively unchallenged.
Bromfield’s players kept the ball at Tyngsborough’s end of the field for most of the game but had trouble keeping possession once they were in scoring territory. A number of well-executed corner shots by junior Colin Grant failed to pay off. Coach Tom Hill told the players after the game that they had played well, but he said there was “too much dribbling” and not enough passing, giving defending players too much time to get organized. And headers from 10 feet in front of the goal were “not going to work,” he said. Better to head to the side, he advised..
The Trojans were scheduled to play second-place Littleton away on Wednesday, Sept. 30, but rain cancelled the game. A Friday, Oct. 2, game was already canceled due to a forecast that promised heavy rain.
