This week police made three motor vehicle stops, which resulted in one citation, one verbal warning, and one arrest. The ambulance crew responded to six medical emergencies and took three people to the hospital, two with Advanced Life Support on board; three people refused treatment and/or transport to the hospital. Two people called seeking an agricultural burn permit.
Tuesday, May 26
At 10 a.m. a caller reported a brush fire near the railroad tracks on Depot Road. The Fire Department was dispatched and extinguished the blaze. A resident called at 1:08 p.m. to report a case of identity theft. Someone called at 1:45 p.m. with concerns about a car parked on the side of Bolton Road, facing against the traffic. The caller said that the driver, a woman, appeared to be asleep in the older-model maroon sedan. The car was gone when police arrived to investigate. At 3:43 p.m. a state trooper called to request that a tow truck be sent for a disabled truck on Stow Road that had “rolled off the road” into a ditch. Police say the trooper had been attempting to stop the vehicle because it was traveling very slowly, about 10 miles per hour, and the trooper suspected the driver may have been in need of medical attention. However, the driver did not appear to be ill and was not injured in the mishap. No citation was issued. Someone called at 5:11 p.m. to report that bicyclists traveling on Mass. Ave. were not following the rules of the road. The bicyclists were gone when police arrived. A Shaker Road resident called at 9:36 p.m. with concerns that a light was on in a neighbor’s garage and the neighbor was not home. Police checked the area and reported that everything appeared to be OK. An officer on patrol at 10:34 p.m. stopped a car on Mass. Ave. for failing to stop at a stop sign. The officer subsequently arrested the driver, 21-year-old Autumn Goodwin of Fitchburg, for failure to stop, operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, and having an invalid inspection sticker.
Wednesday, May 27
A caller reported at 4:16 p.m. that a black Nissan was speeding through the school zone on Mass. Ave. The caller was unable to get the car’s license plate number; police did not locate the car. Someone called at 7:51 p.m. to notify police that a vehicle was going to be left overnight in the parking lot of a business on Ayer Road. At 8:26 p.m. police were called to the scene of a single-car accident on Ayer Road. Police say that the car, headed north, went off the road and into a stone wall after the driver lost control while reaching for his cellphone. The car was towed. The driver was not injured but was cited for failure to stay within marked lanes.
Thursday, May 28
At 1:45 p.m. a caller reported that a large tree had fallen into the southbound lane of Littleton Road. The Department of Public Works was dispatched to remove it. Someone called at 3:23 p.m. to report that several horses were running loose on Stow Road. One of the responding officers determined who the owners were and notified them. The horses were corralled at a residence on Stow Road until the owners were able to retrieve them. At 3:46 p.m. a caller alerted police that a large tree on Craggs Road was creaking loudly and may have been about to break. The DPW was asked to remove the tree. At 6:50 p.m. a caller reported seeing a mountain lion crossing Ayer Road.
Friday, May 29
At 11:50 a.m. police were called to an accident scene on Old Shirley Road. Police say a motorcyclist who was attempting to turn onto Old Shirley Road from Ayer Road lost control of the bike in the loose stone on the road. The driver was not injured and there was minor damage to the bike. A caller reported a disabled tractor-trailer truck on Ayer Road at 1:08 p.m. The responding officer found that a tow truck was en route.
Saturday, May 30
Someone stopped at the station at 6:19 p.m. to see if anyone had turned in a pair of reading glasses; they hadn’t.
Sunday, May 31
At 2:45 p.m. an Oak Hill Road resident called with concerns about an alarm at a neighbor’s house that had been going off for some time. Police found the house engulfed in heavy white smoke and notified the Fire Department and ambulance crew. Emergency personnel found the owner on the second floor; he was taken to the hospital with Advanced Life Support on board. Someone stopped at the station at 4:49 p.m. to turn in a set of keys that was found. At 7:06 p.m. a caller reported a limb in the roadway on Under Pin Hill Road. An officer removed the limb.
Monday, June 1
At 12:28 p.m. a caller reported a two-car accident in front of the post office on Ayer Road. Police say one driver was exiting the parking lot and failed to yield to traffic, striking the second car. There were no injuries; neither car required a tow. The driver of the first car was cited for failure to yield. At 7:31 p.m. a Fairbank Street resident called with suspicions about a young man seen walking down the caller’s driveway toward Oak Hill Road. The man was gone when police arrived to investigate.
