Charges are about to be filed against a suspect for an April 28 burglary at a Still River Road residence, Harvard Police Detective Daniele Fortunato told the Press this week. She said that police got a break in the case after the suspect tried to pawn some of the stolen items in Worcester.
Fortunato reported that the suspect, a 46-year-old man from Oakham with Worcester ties and an extensive criminal history, will be charged with receiving stolen property.
She said that with the recent increase in break-ins reported by nearby towns, residents should always lock their doors. Suspects in area burglaries have come from as far away as New Hampshire, she said. One suspect, after being asked why he came to this area, responded, “City people lock their doors; country people don’t,” Fortunato reported.
However, she did point out that not all recent break-ins have been through unlocked doors. In the case of the April 28 burglary on Still River Road, the thief used a crowbar to break into the house through a back door, stealing laptops, an iPad, jewelry, and money. After the homeowner posted an account of the incident on Nextdoor Harvard, police received a tip that a brown- or tan-colored sedan driven by “a male wearing dark glasses” had been seen in Still River about the time of the break. The Harvard police issued a “be-on-the-lookout” bulletin to area police, but the alert produced no suspects.
