The Bromfield boys’ track and field team brought home its first win of the season in a May 5 dual meet against Gardner with a score of 76–68. Two days later, Bromfield competed against both Tyngsborough and Narragansett at the McCurdy Track, triumphing over Tyngsborough 101–40 and losing to Narragansett by a score of 84.5–61.5.

The team had solid performances across the board at the Gardner meet, but the day’s most exciting race was the 4×100-meter relay. Senior Alvin Li started the race and handed off to freshman Jonathan Gall, who handed off to junior Ian Rowatt. Although Bromfield’s sprinters were fast, Gardner’s were faster, and coming into the last handoff, Gardner was leading by about 3 meters. Rowatt passed the baton to junior Liam Sullivan, who streaked after the Gardner runner. With only 50 meters left in the race, Sullivan began to close the gap until the sprinters were neck and neck. As they reached the finish line, Sullivan inched ahead, winning the relay for Bromfield.

Against Tyngsborough, the Trojans had strong performances in the running events, taking first in all of them. The Bromfield boys particularly excelled in the 1-mile, which they swept. Sophomore Paul Chapman finished first, followed by sophomore Will Day and eighth-grader Kyle Schoenberg. In the field events, Bromfield took first place in the high jump, long jump, pole vault, and triple jump. Sullivan won the high jump, Gall won both the long jump and the triple jump, and sophomore Jamie Barrett won the pole vault.

Bromfield faced tough competition at the Narragansett meet. The team secured three first-place finishes in the running events and one first-place finish in the field events, and both relay teams won. In the individual running events, seniors Hunter Ashley and Price Day were the only members of the team to place first. Ashley took first in the 200-meter, and Day won both the 800-meter and the 2-mile. In the field events, junior Beck Peterson brought Bromfield a first-place finish in the discus.

The Trojans’ 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams placed first against Narragansett. The 4×100 relay was run by freshman Tucker Banios, Gall, Rowatt, and Sullivan. Sophomore Tristan Cronin, senior Matt Polimou, sophomore Joseph Mitchell, and Barrett ran the 4×400 relay.

Bromfield’s next meet will be away against Oakmont on Thursday, May 14. The Trojans will also compete in the District Class meet on Saturday, May 16, in Shrewsbury.
