This week police made 27 motor vehicle stops, which resulted in 20 citations, five verbal warnings, and two summonses. The ambulance crew responded to six medical emergencies and took six people to the hospital. Police received calls from three residents who reported possible cases of identify theft when they attempted to file their tax returns.
Tuesday, March 31
At 12:52 a.m. a technician from Sprint Corporation called to alert police that he’d be working on the cell tower on Poor Farm Road. A resident stopped at the station at 8:16 a.m. to report that when he tried to file his tax return, he received notification that it had already been filed. Police advised him to contact the Internal Revenue Service. An officer on patrol at 6:04 p.m. notified the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to treat an icy spot on Mass. Ave. near Slough Road. At 7:18 p.m. an Abbot Lane resident called to report a found dog. The matter was referred to the animal control officer. Someone called to report a disabled vehicle on Route 2 westbound at 8:59 p.m. At 11:16 p.m. police notified the state DOT about more icy patches that needed treatment on Ayer Road in the center of town.
Wednesday, April 1
A Poor Farm Road resident called at 7:09 a.m. to report a bear in the yard. An Oak Hill Road resident called at 1:49 p.m. to report that the family dog had escaped the electric fencing and hadn’t returned. The animal control officer was notified. A Candleberry Lane resident called at 8:27 p.m. to file a report about a possible case of identity theft. She said her bank had reported suspicious activity on her account, and a Verizon store in Utah had alerted her that someone had tried to open an account there in her name.
Thursday, April 2
At 9:18 a.m. a Poor Farm Road resident called to report a large black bear wrestling with a plastic pipe in his back yard. At 7:24 p.m. someone called to report hitting a deer with his car on Ayer Road. The car was drivable; the deer died. A few minutes later someone called to report a dead deer in the roadway on Ayer Road. The DPW was notified to remove the carcass.
Friday, April 3
At 10:05 a.m. a caller reported a car stuck in the mud at Bellevue Cemetery. Police asked the DPW to clear a path in the snow near the car so the tow truck could get in and winch out the car. There was minor damage to the cemetery lawn, according to police. A resident stopped at the station at 12:48 p.m. to file a report about some items that were stolen during a recent trip to Las Vegas. After a caller reported ice on the roadway at Littleton and Pinnacle roads at 2:48 p.m., the DPW was notified to treat the road in that area. At 4:25 p.m. a Park Lane resident reported that a family member had just heard two gunshots. Police checked the area but found nothing suspicious. Police speculate that the sounds could have come from the Harvard Sportsmen’s Club. While responding to a medical emergency on Bolton Road at 11:45 p.m., police arrested David R. Packard, 53, of North Weymouth for assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. Packard was taken to Nashoba Valley Medical Center for treatment and was later released to police custody for booking.
Saturday, April 4
An officer on patrol at 2:32 a.m. noticed two youths loitering in front of Harvard Lanes and stopped to advise them to move along. Someone stopped at the station at 11:52 a.m. to file a report about a possible case of identity theft after he tried to file his tax return and was notified that it had already been filed. Police advised him to contact the IRS. At 12:28 p.m. someone called to report five donkeys loose on Bolton Road. Police contacted the animals’ owner, who rounded them up and escorted them home. Someone called at 12:57 p.m. to report that a car had sped by him at close range while he was bicycling on Bolton Road. The officer on duty identified the vehicle’s owner with the plate number provided by the caller, and the officer spoke with the driver about using more caution when driving near bicyclists. At 1:04 p.m. an officer from the Wells, Maine, Police Department called to ask Harvard officers to notify an Oak Hill Road resident that his wallet had been found. Someone called at 1:52 p.m. to report a large tree limb blocking part of the roadway on Oak Hill Road. The DPW was asked to remove it. A Harvard resident stopped at the station at 4:32 p.m. to report a case of identity theft discovered when he tried to file his tax return. He was advised to notify the IRS. An officer on patrol at 6:47 p.m. noticed that a speed limit sign was knocked over on Old Shirley Road and referred the matter to the DPW.

An officer on patrol at 1:22 a.m. requested that the DPW treat an icy patch on Slough Road.
Monday, April 6
An Oak Hill Road resident called at 9:38 a.m. seeking permission for an outdoor cooking fire. At 12:02 p.m. an Old Shirley Road resident called to complain about a construction truck speeding down the road. Police located the vehicle and gave the driver a verbal warning. At 2:48 p.m. someone called to report a black Lab running loose near Fruitlands Museum. Police advised the caller that there is no leash law in Harvard, but they did refer the matter to animal control.
