The Virginia Thurston Memorial Scholarship is given to a Bromfield senior who has earned recognition for civic and community involvement. Because interest rates have been low for several years, the scholarship trust has not generated enough income to keep the award at its former $500 level. In 2014 the Board of Selectmen did not offer the scholarship for lack of funds. This year, after discussion with family member Bob Thurston, the board decided to make the award but to reduce it to $250. The selectmen expect that amount to be sustainable even if interest rates remain low.
