Sophmore Hannah LoChiatto dodges a Narragansett player.
The girls’ varsity basketball team clinched its fifth win of the season 46–38 over Narragansett on Tuesday, Jan. 13, at home. The Trojans now stand with a 5–4 record.
Sophomore Hannah LoChiatto and senior Amy Jorgensen led Bromfield offensively, with nine and six baskets, respectively. Jorgensen had two three-pointers. With the help of teammates, including senior guard Kirsten Sundeen and sophomore guard Lexi Norcross, Bromfield established an early lead that was never fully answered by Narragansett.
However, they did come close.
Narragansett turned a 15-point deficit from the end of the third period into a three-point deficit by the middle of the fourth. Numerous sunk foul shots and a quick succession of layups from Raegan Moulton threatened Bromfield’s lead.
But the Trojans responded to increasing pressure from Narragansett’s offense, and LoChiatto secured two baskets, reestablishing her team’s lead.
Narragansett was never able to tie the score, partially because Bromfield defended its end of the court well. The Trojan girls played spectacular defense in both halves, winning rebounds consistently. Sophomore forward Abbey Pacl, along with Norcross and Sundeen, each had six rebounds for the game. Norcross also led her team in steals with three total.
The Narragansett Warriors’ Mel Goss had the most rebounds of the game with seven total. Her teammate Moulton followed with six rebounds.
Bromfield also defeated Clinton on Monday, Jan. 12, at home with a score of 54–21. The Trojans were forced to recover from the loss of senior guard Maegan Cullinan to an injury in the Friday, Jan. 9, game against Ayer. The Trojans lost 42–37 to the Panthers.
Again, LoChiatto and Jorgensen ran the scoreboard against Clinton. With 10 points each, they were followed closely by Pacl with nine points and Norcross with eight. Every Bromfield player scored at least a basket apiece. However, Clinton’s Alyssa Hatch racked up the highest score with 12 points total.
The Trojans will continue their season on Thursday away at South Lancaster High School at 7 p.m.
Sportswriters Julia Hoggins and Casey Russell are seniors at the Bromfield School.
