Both the Bromfield girls’ and boys’ indoor track teams suffered hard losses to track powerhouse Littleton on Thursday, Jan. 8, by 26–65 and 31–60, respectively. The meet was held at Shrewsbury High School.
The girls’ team had a particularly difficult meet, and their small team made it especially challenging to win points. The Trojans fared best in the sprinting and field events, with sophomore Sarah Doben taking second in the 55-meter dash and first in the 300 meters. In the 55-meter hurdles, junior Deirdre Kennedy placed second, and freshman Anya Begue placed third.
Bromfield’s strongest performances came from the field events, with sophomore Grace Turnbull winning the high jump and senior Brianna Harte winning the shot put.
The boys’ team fared a little better than the girls, capturing four first-place finishes. Sophomore Cole Stecyk placed first in the 600 meters, senior Price Day took first in both the 1000 meters and the mile, and junior Beck Peterson placed first in the shot put.
Division 5 State Relays
On Saturday, Jan. 10, both the boys and girls sent relay teams to the Division 5 State Relay meet. The girls’ 4x200m relay team, which consisted of Begue, freshman Cameron Hettich, Turnbull, and Doben, placed 12th out of a field of 43 relay teams with a time of 1:58.96.
Price Day, senior Matt Polimou, Stecyk, and Will Day ran in the boys’ 4x800m relay and placed 12th out of a field of 22 relay teams.
Top scorers
In indoor-track scoring, five points are awarded for a first-place finish, three points are awarded for a second-place finish, and one point is awarded for a third-place finish. Places below third are not scored in dual meets; and on relay teams, points are distributed evenly among the four members of the team. As the season has progressed, each team member has accumulated points. For the girls’ team, the top three cumulative scores are held by Doben, 34 points; freshman Sophie Beckman, 25 points; and senior Brianna Harte, 20 points. On the boys’ team, the top three are Price Day, 36.25 points; senior Hunter Ashley, 34 points; and Stecyk, 22.5 points.
Bromfield has three dual meets remaining. The Trojans’ next meet is Wednesday, Jan. 14, against Murdock at Shrewsbury High School. Looking ahead to next week, Bromfield will compete against Narragansett on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at Wachusett Regional High School.
