This week police made six motor vehicle stops, which resulted in five citations and one verbal warning. The Harvard ambulance responded to three emergency calls and took three people to the hospital. There were two motor vehicle accidents, neither resulting in an injury.
Tuesday, Dec. 2
An officer on patrol at 5:52 a.m. stopped to investigate a man dressed in camouflage in a parked car on Prospect Hill Road. The man told the officer he was getting ready to go deer hunting. At 12:35 p.m. police were called to the scene of a two-car accident at the General Store. Police say one car accidentally backed into a car parked in front of the General. There was no visible damage to the first vehicle and only minor damage to the parked car. There were no injuries, and no citations were issued. Someone called at 5:48 p.m. to notify police about a dog running loose on West Bare Hill Road. Police contacted the animal control officer.
Wednesday, Dec. 3
At 11:25 a.m. police went to the scene of a two-car accident in front of the post office on Ayer Road. Police say the first vehicle was slowing for a turn into the post office parking lot when it was struck from behind. There was some damage to the rear of the first vehicle, and heavy damage to the second. The driver of the second car was cited for failure to use care in stopping. Both vehicles were towed.
Thursday, Dec. 4
An officer on patrol at 11:38 a.m. found two trucks and a trailer blocking an entire lane on Depot Road. The officer spoke to the contractor who owned the vehicles and asked that they be moved. An Oak Hill Road resident called at 2:03 p.m. to notify police about a suspicious encounter with a stranger. She said that while she was checking her mailbox, a car pulled up, and the driver asked if she knew of any homes for rent in Harvard. The caller gave police a description of the car and they checked the area, but the vehicle was gone. Police received an emergency call at 3:14 p.m. alerting them to a car being driven erratically on Mass. Avenue. Police located the vehicle and advised the driver to use more caution. At 8:52 p.m. someone called to report a two-car accident on Oak Hill Road. Police say the driver of a car headed west on Oak Hill Road was momentarily distracted and struck an unoccupied car parked on the side of the road. Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage and were towed. The driver and a passenger were treated at the scene for minor injuries. The driver was cited for failure to stay within marked lanes.
Friday, Dec. 5
A fire officer called at 2 p.m. to report that someone had stolen the Smokey the Bear sign on Ayer Road, where the fire department posts the fire threat level each day. Police say the sign, which appeared to have been sawed off, was valued at about $500. A resident of Trail Ridge Way called at 4:50 p.m. to report a smoke alarm sounding in a vacant home nearby. A fire officer went to the scene and determined that the alarm was faulty.
Saturday, Dec. 6
A Bolton Road resident called at 11:03 a.m. to report a power line arcing nearby. Police notified National Grid, and a fire officer went to the scene to stand by until the problem was fixed. At 5:10 p.m. an environmental police officer called for backup from Harvard officers after encountering a group of people in the parking lot of the Oxbow Wildlife Refuge, whom he suspected of possessing drugs. Police arrived and issued civil citations to the parties present for possession of marijuana. A Brown Road resident called at 5:16 p.m. to report the smell of propane outside the home. Fire officers checked the area but did not find a source for the smell.
Sunday, Dec. 7
A resident on Old Boston Turnpike called at 8:50 a.m. to report that the mailbox had been struck forcefully with an object, possibly a baseball bat. An officer arrived to check it out and reported that the box appeared to have been struck by a car. At 12:47 p.m. a Murray Lane resident reported hearing gunshots coming from the nearby conservation area. An officer checked the area but did not find anyone.
