The Bromfield boys’ varsity soccer team’s run in the playoffs ended on Nov. 15, with a 3-0 loss to Sutton in the district finals at Nashoba Regional High School. Bromfield, the number six seed in the tournament, was up against the number one seed, Sutton.
To start the game, both teams showed good defense. But Sutton played more aggressively on offense, charging through the Trojan defenders. Just seven minutes into the game, Sutton’s Kevin Rothermich scored the first goal, assisted by Cole Acocelli. Five minutes later, Sutton scored again; this time Acocelli struck the blow unassisted, giving the Sammies a 2-0 lead and leaving the Trojans in an early hole.
The Trojans were on the defensive end for most of the game as Sutton’s offense was too much for them to handle. To make matters worse for the Trojans, freshman Joey Calebresi was injured on a foul call. He would return later, but not before Acocelli scored another goal for Sutton, this time assisted by Eric Bater. With a 3-0 lead, Sutton cruised through the rest of the first half.

A memorable season ends
For the second half, Bromfield changed goalies, replacing senior Ben Cadman with senior Tyler Brandom. Although Cadman let in three goals, he had an impressive 16 saves in his very busy night. In the second half, Brandom and the Bromfield defense kept Sutton at bay. But the replacement didn’t help Bromfield’s offense, which was held to three shots for the entire game, while Sutton had shots aplenty against the Trojan defense. Another injury occurred for Bromfield as junior Mark Schwiegerhausen slid across the turf field, injuring his head during the slide. The rest of the game belonged to Sutton as its offense maintained pressure on Bromfield’s defense, leaving the Trojans in the dust with the 3-0 win.
Bromfield ended its regular season with a 10-6-2 record and a trail of good memories for a magnificent run.
